Dead Silence (2007)

Directed by: James Wan
Stars: Ryan Kwanten, Donnie Wahlberg, & Judith Roberts
Rated R for horror violence and images

Beware the stare of Mary Shaw,
she had no children, only dolls.
And if you see her in your dreams,
be sure you never ever scream...

From the producers of Saw, I bring you Dead Silence, a classic horror film catering to a modern audience. Wow, that sounded professional, didn't it?

The plot is fairly simple: A widower returns to his hometown to find the answer to his wife's murder, which may be linked to the local legend of a murdered ventriloquist.

Simple, straightforward.

Of course, Jamie (Kwanten) is a suspect in his own wife's murder, which leads to a smart ass detective (Wahlberg) following him around and providing plenty of cynical commentary. And the murdered ventriloquist is this creepy old lady who had been buried with her collection of 101 dolls in 1941, and who if you see her, will rip out your tongue if you scream. Add in a couple of fearful old men, a crazy lady carrying around a dead bird, and a camera filter bleaching out every color besides blood red, and you got yourself a horror movie.

This film is decidedly less bloody than the Saw franchise, but still maintains a similar feel. Short takes, lots of hanging questions, and one hell of a twist at the end. The background music and sounds are what truly contribute to the fear factor--in fact, the music is very very similar to the Saw tracks. One twist in the fabric of sound is silence. The movie plays on the basic human fear of dead silence. Think about it, why do you turn on the TV when you first get home? Why do you turn on a fan when you go to sleep? Sound is comforting; it reminds us that we're not alone. Perfect silence makes us feel uncomfortable, and the film exploits this.

There's a lot of reflection on classic horror movie elements. You get the local legend plot line, the strained father-son relationship, a disbelieving cop, a "we don't talk about that" townie attitude, lots of shadow play, and a murdered soul hankering for revenge. I have to say the dolls are really creepy, and will make you wary to be in a dark room with one alone.

This movie does have more of a scare factor than the Saw series does. Saw is more "could this really happen?" scary, while Dead Silence is more like jump in your seat scary. The acting isn't great and the plotline isn't truly original, but if your looking for a good horror flick with cheap thrills, this is the film for you.

Happy watching!!

The Ring (2002)

Directed by: Gore Verbinski
Stars: Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, & David Dorfman
Rated PG-13 for thematic elements, disturbing images, language, and some drug references

I remember being 9 years old, at my grandma's house, and having my older cousin ask me if I wanted to watch The Ring with her. When she told me it was a scary movie, I was all for it. Unfortunately, my mom overheard us, and barred me from seeing it. Now, ten years later, I've finally gotten around to watching it!

So here's the plot premise:

"Rachel Keller is a journalist investigating a videotape that may have killed four teenagers (including her niece). There is an urban legend about this tape: the viewer will die seven days after watching it. If the legend is correct, Rachel will have to run against time to save her son's and her own life." (courtesy of imdb.com)

Now, I'm not one to be easily scared or disturbed (believe me, I thought the Exorcist was tame). In fact, I quite enjoy anything morbid, so this review may be quite different from a normal person (I fully admit that I am not remotely normal!)

I thought Naomi Watts embraced her character really well. Too often in horror movies, the acting is terrible, and I mean TERRIBLE! She's very convincing as Rachel, the woman determined to dig up the mystery of the cursed tape. All the characters are fleshed out and believable, which is a nice change from Hollywood's typical talentless starlet castings.

What makes this movie a hit is the play on psychological elements. Blood and gore are all good and fun, but to be truly scary, a film has to target the mind. The tape itself is the stereotypical psychotic montage: creepy images brought together in a schitzophrenic slideshow. What bothered me was the noise that played along with it--a high pitched tone that instantly induces a headache. Not fun. The tape's images are also inserted between scenes, creating a subliminal-messaging-effect. By playing with your mind, the movie inserts itself in your memory, making it difficult to stop thinking about when the movie ends. And the images will resonate in your head for days, I guarantee it.

The mystery of the tape, and the desperation to beat its curse, is the driving force of the film. It really causes you to tense up, as you're never certain exactly what will happen next. This is a great psycho-thriller type movie for anyone who enjoys a scare.* You will also be a little weary around any unmarked videocassette tapes around your house.

Happy watching!!

*Granted, I didn't think it was scary. But then again, I'm a freak :)

Mission Statement

After a few sporatic blog posts, I should probably explain what I’m doing here. This blog is going to be dedicated largely to both movies and makeup. I am a huge movie person. Believe me, I do little else in my free time but watch movies. I love watching them, and I love learning about what goes on behind the scenes. I like to read up on actors and actresses until I feel like I know them. It’s kinda weird and rather pathetic, but that’s just what I’m interested in. So, a large portion of posts will include movie reviews, actor/actress profiles, movie trivia, upcoming films, etc.

Now, another passion of mine is makeup. I’m not what you would call the stereotypical ‘girly girl’ but I do like to indulge in hair and makeup products. So, I will be posting product reviews, makeup looks, favorite products, etc etc. These posts will probably be more female-friendly than the movie posts, which will definitely cater to both sexes.

Because this is a personal blog, I will probably be posting more personal articles, too. These could include anything from pictures of my everyday life, antics with my friends, to more serious issues that come to my attention. I guess we’ll just see how this goes.

If anyone is reading this, I hope you find it useful or minorly entertaining. Otherwise, I guess I’m just talking to myself :)

30 (Movie Related) Things About Me

1. If I recognize an actor in something, I can name atleast 5-6 other movies/shows they've been in and their characters' names, any awards they have won, who they're married to/dating and whether they have kids, and atleast 3 other irrelevant facts about their lives.

2. I could easily spend more time watching Special Features than actual movies, especially "Making of"s and Bloopers.

3. I have yet to see a scary movie that actually frightened me.

4. I often consider the third movie in a trilogy to be my favorite (LOTR, Pirates, Bourne, Indiana Jones...)

5. My favorite Disney movie is the Lion King.

6. Of the 40 films Johnny Depp's been in, I've seen, atleast in part, 25. And I've only been disappointed once.

7. The first horror movie I remember seeing was Dog Soldiers. And one of my favorites is the Descent. Both were directed by the same person.

8. I adore period films, especially those set in the Victorian age.

9. I've easily seen over 1300 movies, and I'm only 19.

10. I found the amputation scene of 127 Hours more disturbing than any of the Saw movies.

11. I think Morgan Freeman, Sam Elliot, Emma Thompson, and Julie Andrews have the most soothing voices of all time.

12. I laugh everytime I see the pencil scene in the Dark Knight.

13. I've watched Maverick every June since 4th grade.

14. Quentin Tarantino is one of my favorite directors, and we share a birthday.

15. I can't stand Owen Wilson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ed Harris, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, or Laura Linney.

16. I've never seen all three original Star Wars movies.

17. I often quite like movies that get poor reviews.

18. If a movie is based off of a book, once I see the movie, its impossible for me to read the book.

19. In the Exorcist, the scene where Regan speaks with the demon's voice for the first time made me laugh. And the only thing that creeped me out was the spider walk down the stairs.

20. I'd sooner be able to pick my favorite hair than pick my all-time favorite movie.

21. imdb.com (Internet Movie Database) is the most visited website on my computer after Yahoo and Facebook.

22. Some of the worst movies I've ever seen are the Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, MegaShark vs Giant Octopus, Tidal Wave: No Escape, Deep Core, and At the Earth's Core (the last 4 are all films I watched for my Geology & Cinema class).

23. I adamantly refuse to see the movies W and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.

24. I think being a film critic, a movie fact checker, or a film editor would be the greatest job in the world.

25. I've yet to meet a bigger movie buff than me.

26. I was in total shock when I first found out Mel Gibson was Australian, Christian Bale was British, and Johnny Depp was American.

27. I think Tom Cruise is one of the most overrated actors of all time.

28. I was near tears when I found out Bernie Mac and Heath Ledger died.

29. I often make movie references in everyday conversations, and get ridiculously excited if people understand the reference.

30. I can quote almost all of the dialogue in Mean Girls and Matilda.

Captain Jack Sparrow Makeup Look

To celebrate my love for all things Johnny Depp, I decided to do a Jack Sparrow-esque look. The above photo was the visual I used, plus my memory of the movies. I'm actually really happy with how this one turned out, and I think it'd work as a great night look or a bit of a dark day look.

I basically wanted a messy yet polished look, if that makes any sense. There's lots of smudged eyeliner, but it still looks rather clean. The skin is flawless, but still has a dewy (sweaty) sheen. Lots of bronzer and mascara, and a great nude lip.

Lots o' lashes (no falsies!!)

Here's what the full face looked like:

I then proceeded to have some fun with my Webcam :)

Face Products:
Pond's Rejuveness Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer
L'Oreal True Match liquid foundation (N6 Honey Beige)
ELF All Over Cover Stick (Honey)
Rimmel Natural Bronzer (Sun Glow)
Maybelline Expertwear blush (Tropical Melon)
Maybelline Expertwear blush (Moon Dust--used as highlighter)

Eye Products:
ELF Eyelid Primer (Champagne)
ELF Cream Eyeliner (Black)
ELF Matte Eyeshadow (Charcoal)
Ardell Brow Defining Powder (Taupe)
Almay Eye Shadow trio for Hazel eyes (gunmetal shade)
Wet n Wild Coloricon palette (Lust--matte white shade)
L'Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black mascara

Lip Products:
Rimmel lipstick (Birthday Suit)
ELF Mineral lipstick (Natural Nymph)
L'Oreal Colour Riche lipgloss (Rich Brown)

Oxidized Copper

This is a makeup look I created when I was bored. Its basically a teal/aqua eye with copper/bronze eyeliner. Easy, pretty, and looks harder than it really was.

Products Used:

ELF Eyelid Primer
Maybelline Dream Mousse Eye Shadow in Mint Dream
ELF 100 Eye Shadow Palette (pastel teal, light blue, true teal, trye blue)
ELF Shimmer Eyeliner in Boldly Bronzed

ELF Pout Perfecter

I recently ordered the Pout Perfector in a huge haul from ELF. They were having a huge sale (60% sitewide!) and I absolutely couldn't resist. I was able to pick up a bunch of things that I've been wanting to try. The first of which was the Pout Perfector. I mainly wanted to see what it was used for -- I'd never heard of the product type before.

So here comes my review:

Claim: "Create more volumized, fuller looking lips with the optical illusion of the Pout Perfecter gloss. The sheer pearl gloss instantly transforms your dull lip color to a defined light reflecting glow. This makeup artist secret can now be yours for picture perfect fuller lips, everyday!"

First Impression: This looks like a metallic-y, glittery pink lipgloss.

The applicator is a brush as opposed to the more typical doe-foot applicator, which I quite like. There is a little less placement control with this type of brush, though.

The gloss is rather thick, but not sticky (a combo I love!). Its very glittery with a metallic finish, which gives lips are more plumped look. A dab in the middle of the lower lip plus a little just by the cupid's bow instantly gives the illusion of fuller lips. I've actually read reviews of people getting asked if they got lip jobs when wearing it!

I used this over a self-made lipstick color (I mixed a bright Barbie-pink with my favorite nude color, and got a gorgeous new shade!). I have a rather thin upper lip and an average lower lip, but this gloss really upped the oof! factor. I had fuller, sexier looking lips without the tingling effect of a plumper! It'd definitely work for a nighttime look, especially for going to a party or a club.

The main downfall I find with this product is the texture. Unfortunately, the glitter is not very finely milled and can be felt when rubbing your lips together. This gritty feel reminds me of when salt or sugar gets stuck in my lipgloss. Its rather irritating. I also wish they had a wider array of colors -- there's only the pink 'Glow' shade. I think a nude color would be gorgeous.

Overall, I give this 3 out of 5 stars. The color and effect is gorgeous, but the texture really does it in for me. I also don't see myself reaching for this very often, so I probably wouldn't repurchase it.

Dupes Dupes and More Dupes!!! (Updated 4/16/14)

Now, I'm definitely one of those people who is completely unwilling to spend more than seven bucks on a lipstick or an eye shadow, but I can't help but lust after any YouTube video I see featuring Urban Decay, Stila, or any other high-end products (Dior, YSL, Lancome). They're so pretty! So, due to my cheapskate tendencies, I constantly seek out drugstore dupes* for these expensive products.

Using validations from dozens of videos and blogposts, I've compiled this huge-ass list of products. There's a lot of MAC here, plus some Chanel, Lancome, Dior, Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder, Stila, NARS, Urban Decay, Too Faced, etc etc. I've organized everything by product type (lipstick, eye shadow, blush, blah blah blah), and will continue to add to this as I discover more and more dupes. This is probably the most comprehensive list I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been working pretty hard on this!

Tell me any dupes you've heard of, or use personally! Or if you don't see one you're looking for, please comment and let me know!

~Update~: All brands are now in alphabetical order. Dupes include not only color matches, but also comparable formulas, textures, and staying power.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Directed by: Jim Sharman
Stars: Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, & Richard O’Brien
Rated R for Strong Sexual Content, Some Language, and Comic Violence

Prepare yourself, readers, for the mental mind fuck of the century. Rocky Horror is the ultimate in cult classics*. Where else would you find a horny transvestite, a hunchback, an optimist in nerd glasses, and a German wheelchair bound scientist who knows that a “sonic transducer is... some kind of audio-vibratory-physio-molecular transport device”? From the catchy songs sung just slightly off-key to the frighteningly memorable characters, this musical will literally blow your mind (sorry for that terrible cliché!) and leave you saying “What the hell did I just watch?!”

Here’s a brief summary of the plot:

“While driving home during a rain filled night, straight-laced lovebirds Brad and Janet, by chance, end up at the castle of one Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his strange and bizarre entourage, and find that he's having a party. This is no ordinary party, no ordinary night. This is the unveiling of the Dr's latest creation: Rocky; A man-made Adonis that will give...absolute pleasure…. Projected along with a musical soundtrack to give "audience participation" a new meaning in dimension, time and space, this shall be a night that both Brad and Janet will remember for a very, very long time in the sexually kinky, rock 'n roll (f)rock-opera world of a gender-bending scientist...and his time warped plans.” (from Internet Movie Database)

I’m trying very hard not to give too much of this movie away, because the surprise of each scene is what truly makes this movie so great. You literally have no idea what is going to happen next. The first time I saw it, I probably said, “Whaaat?!” about a hundred times. The characters are well-casted, highly memorable, and completely unique. The role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter was simply written for Tim Curry. The songs are cleverly written and inadvertently catchy: I’ve had more than one get stuck in my head on various occasions, which always earns me some stares on the bus when I start humming to myself. (If you’re a major Gleek like me, you may already have heard a few songs if you watched the “Rocky Horror” episode.) I’d say if you’re into morbidly funny, raunchy, satirical musicals (me ME!!), this is the movie for you.

I can say for sure that this movie is definitely not for everyone. Its sexual satire is abundant and makes for many awkward and highly uncomfortable moments. A bit of advice: don’t watch this with your parents. Also, this movie is a musical, so if you’re not into that, skip it. However, if you simply mute the musical numbers, you will be able to still experience the utter weirdness of the film without dealing with the music (in fact, muting it would probably make it that much more weird!).
I’d definitely recommend watching this at least twice: once to experience the strange epic-ness, and again to better understand what the hell is going on. Also, I’d recommend being at least college-age before watching this, just so you are more capable of understanding in-movie references and to fully appreciate the film.

Happy watching!!

*The greatest thing about Rocky Horror is its cult status. Midnight viewings of the movie are available in cities all across the country, and they are truly worth going to. People go all-out: costumes and makeup (boys and girls alike), props, and Time Warp choreography at the ready. I was lucky enough to go to one of these viewings on my 19th birthday with a bunch of my college friends, and it was an absolute blast! I’d definitely recommend seeing the movie at least once before attending a viewing, since these theatre showings are majorly a crowd of people shouting lines at a movie screen. Sounds strange and abnormal, I know, but nothing is remotely normal about Rocky Horror.
